Two past Presidents of the Iowa Chapter recently passed away:

Carl Grant, the 23rd President of the Iowa Chapter, passed away on April 8 of respiratory failure at home.  First employed in the insurance industry in 1954, he retired from LaMair-Mulock-Condon as a partner after a career of 32 years.  Carl received his CPCU in 1967 and was President of the Chapter for the 1974/75 year.

Dick Wissink, the 26th President of the Iowa Chapter, passed away on May 6 at Valley View Village, where he had resided for a couple of months.  His first job in insurance was in 1952.  He also held the CIC and CPIA designations.  He owned a successful independent agency, Independent Insurance Associates.  Dick received his CPCU in 1968 and was President of the Chapter for the 1977/78 year.

Register for the May Meeting

April was a busy month for some of us in the CPCU Chapter. For starters, we had a great chapter meeting in a location with a fantastic view and included amazing speakers.I always enjoy meetings that include a speakers’ panel. This meeting focused on career development and included the following executives from local insurance companies: Kent Rosenberg, AJ Gallagher; Dianna Taylor, Nationwide; and Tanya Wentzel, EMC Insurance. It was very interesting to listen to the paths each speaker took and obtain perspectives from both the company and agent side.

One week later, a few us went to the annual CPCU Leadership Summit in Baltimore, MD. If you have never been to a Leadership Summit, you really should give it a try. The meeting is a lot smaller than the annual meeting and is mainly at-tended by local and national volunteers. It is also set up to focus more on networking, with lots of formal and informal gatherings, as well as smaller sessions. For the past few years, and like this year, the meeting focused more on the chapters and learning how to be more involved. However, I am excited to say that next year the Leadership Summit will be bringing back the educational and CE sessions! So if you are looking for a great CPCU event, that costs less and provides as much as the Annual Meeting, then we’ll see you next year at the Leadership Summit. The venue will be released soon, so look for more information from The Society. [click to continue…]

Spring is officially here! The flowers and trees are blooming, and for many of us, it’s that time of year where we go on a cleaning spree. Opening the windows, pulling everything out, removing clutter, doing a few home improvements, and getting that ‘new house’ feel again.

Have you ever thought about what other things may need to be refreshed, decluttered, or maybe added on to? I am thinking about your insurance portfolio. How many years has it been since you last had a discussion about your coverages while comparing them to your current needs? I think back to last year’s I-Day when then Chapter President Dalith Wells talked about the importance of personal umbrella liability coverage and the large benefits it provides compared to the relatively small cost. I echo those words and take it a step further by asking you to review your entire portfolio. Even though we work in the Insurance Industry, like most people, we don’t have or take, the time to think about our individual needs and risks. I know I have had a homeowner policy for almost 10 years that has been on auto increase for inflation and have never asked if my coverage is enough or too much, so these comments are just as much to myself.
