Well, it wouldn’t be Iowa without a little ice . . . or perhaps a lot of it. I hope everyone was able to stay safe and warm during the recent ice storm. Although we wish these storms didn’t occur, for me, they always make me think about why I love being in the insurance industry: making sure the needs of others are taken care of when disaster strikes. Many of us know 2016 was a rough year for losses, especially weather. But just think what things would look like without the protection offered by insurance and risk management products. I truly believe the insurance industry keeps the world moving.

Did you know that the Iowa CPCU Society Chapter is one of the premier sponsors of the Fire Safety House, operated by Blank Children’s Hospital? We also donated 100 smoke and carbon monoxide detectors both in 2014 and 2016. These are just a couple of the many ways our chapter, with your help, gives back to our local community. For the past several years, we have donated the proceeds of our golf tournament to Blank Children’s Hospital, and starting this year, we have committed to donating $2500 a year over the next 5 years, helping to fund the brand new Fire Safety House. As such, we are planning a free picnic this year (date TBD, but most likely July-August timeframe) for all of our members and their families, which will include the Fire Safety House. This is a great opportunity to talk about the hazards of fire with your children and teach them important, life-saving information. I am also very excited that we will be taking this opportunity to partner with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa(www.bbbsia.org) to host an event, prior to the picnic, for BBBS matches and families of the Littles. Again, this is due to the member support you provide. Thank you! [click to continue…]

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season spending time with family and friends. I am very excited to take on the role of Chapter President this year and being involved in a new way.

For those of you who do not know me, I have been involved in the insurance industry for over 10 years, all of that time working at Nationwide. Starting out of college, I began in the actuarial pricing Department working on personal lines home and auto rate reviews. I held various roles within pricing for a little over 5 years before moving to Nationwide Affinity Solutions where I am now the Director of Business Intelligence, focusing on reporting, diagnostic analytics, and data governance.

Outside of Nationwide I have been very involved with the local and national CPCU Society, serving in various roles. Currently I am serving as the chair of the National New Designee Committee where we focus on new designee conversion and hosting the New Designee Open House at the annual meeting. I am also involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa as a Big for over 7 years and I am currently sitting on their Board of Directors. Lastly, I am very happy to announce the birth of my first son, Adam “AJ” Robert Haugerud Jr. on December 13. Both mom and baby are doing great!  [click to continue…]

Register for December Meeting

The holiday season will make the month of December speed by and my term as President complete. You may not know that I-Day is not just a one day event for a few of us. Ted Lussem, Kevin Seward and I had the opportunity to visit several companies on November 9th with Mike Koscielny, President Elect of the CPCU Society. We stopped at The IMT Group, EMC Insurance Companies, Grinnell Mutual, Nationwide, GuideOne and NCMIC and had to the chance to speak to new designees, members of the Iowa Chapter, future designees working towards their CPCU and executives of these companies to encourage participation in the Society and completion of the CPCU designation.

On November 10th we celebrated almost 50 of our new designees. You and our new designees are among 2% of the industry professionals with a CPCU. Congratulations to all. We hosted two speakers who talked to us about Personal Lines. Ray Thompson indicated that small companies can compete in this competitive market through local expertise, value added services and intelligent underwriting. Kim Hazelbaker encouraged us to review the top safety pick on the IIHS website to learn how safe your car is compared to others. [click to continue…]
