Spring is officially here! The flowers and trees are blooming, and for many of us, it’s that time of year where we go on a cleaning spree. Opening the windows, pulling everything out, removing clutter, doing a few home improvements, and getting that ‘new house’ feel again.

Have you ever thought about what other things may need to be refreshed, decluttered, or maybe added on to? I am thinking about your insurance portfolio. How many years has it been since you last had a discussion about your coverages while comparing them to your current needs? I think back to last year’s I-Day when then Chapter President Dalith Wells talked about the importance of personal umbrella liability coverage and the large benefits it provides compared to the relatively small cost. I echo those words and take it a step further by asking you to review your entire portfolio. Even though we work in the Insurance Industry, like most people, we don’t have or take, the time to think about our individual needs and risks. I know I have had a homeowner policy for almost 10 years that has been on auto increase for inflation and have never asked if my coverage is enough or too much, so these comments are just as much to myself. Register for March Chapter Meeting

Hello all and happy March. Spring is almost here – then again, some may say it has been here all winter!

March is Ethics month for the CPCU Society and as usual, our March chapter meeting will also align with this topic. Join us on March 16, from 11:30 – 1:00, at EMC Insurance to listen to speaker Kathy Carroll Karpowicz, Director of Ethics at Unity Point Health.

In addition to our chapter meeting, The Institutes is also hosting two free webinars this month related to ethics. The first is on March 15 at 1:00, titled Ethical Decisions of the Future.

The second is on March 21 at 1:00 and is titled Ethical Issues Facing Leaders Today. Both webinars count towards the CE for CPCUs program. To sign up for the webinars, or to review the entire list of upcoming webinars, go to www.cpcusociety.org/education-events/webinars.

Speaking of webinars, did you know that The Institutes offers over 50 FREE webinars each year to paid members? There are a lot of new benefits provided to members including a 25% discount on state CE and a 35% discount other certification courses and study material from The Institutes. There are also a lot of great publications offered 14 different interest groups. If you haven’t looked in a while, take a moment to review your benefits at www.cpcusociety.org. [click to continue…]

February 2017 President’s Message & ChapterGram

Well, it wouldn’t be Iowa without a little ice . . . or perhaps a lot of it. I hope everyone was able to stay safe and warm during the recent ice storm. Although we wish these storms didn’t occur, for me, they always make me think about why I love being in the insurance industry: making sure the needs of others are taken care of when disaster strikes. Many of us know 2016 was a rough year for losses, especially weather. But just think what things would look like without the protection offered by insurance and risk management products. I truly believe the insurance industry keeps the world moving.

Did you know that the Iowa CPCU Society Chapter is one of the premier sponsors of the Fire Safety House, operated by Blank Children’s Hospital? We also donated 100 smoke and carbon monoxide detectors both in 2014 and 2016. These are just a couple of the many ways our chapter, with your help, gives back to our local community. For the past several years, we have donated the proceeds of our golf tournament to Blank Children’s Hospital, and starting this year, we have committed to donating $2500 a year over the next 5 years, helping to fund the brand new Fire Safety House. As such, we are planning a free picnic this year (date TBD, but most likely July-August timeframe) for all of our members and their families, which will include the Fire Safety House. This is a great opportunity to talk about the hazards of fire with your children and teach them important, life-saving information. I am also very excited that we will be taking this opportunity to partner with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa(www.bbbsia.org) to host an event, prior to the picnic, for BBBS matches and families of the Littles. Again, this is due to the member support you provide. Thank you! [click to continue…]
