The holiday season will make the month of December speed by and my term as President complete. You may not know that I-Day is not just a one day event for a few of us. Ted Lussem, Kevin Seward and I had the opportunity to visit several companies on November 9th with Mike Koscielny, President Elect of the CPCU Society. We stopped at The IMT Group, EMC Insurance Companies, Grinnell Mutual, Nationwide, GuideOne and NCMIC and had to the chance to speak to new designees, members of the Iowa Chapter, future designees working towards their CPCU and executives of these companies to encourage participation in the Society and completion of the CPCU designation.

On November 10th we celebrated almost 50 of our new designees. You and our new designees are among 2% of the industry professionals with a CPCU. Congratulations to all. We hosted two speakers who talked to us about Personal Lines. Ray Thompson indicated that small companies can compete in this competitive market through local expertise, value added services and intelligent underwriting. Aloha kakou! This phrase means “greetings to all” in Hawaiian and was just one of the many interesting things I learned during our annual convention. The new designees descended on Honolulu, HI in September for the annual conferment. The record breaking final number of new designees was 7,523, with 12,000 people in attendance at the conferment ceremony. The featured speaker at the conferment, John Quinones reaffirmed our core beliefs in doing the right thing no matter who is looking. More than 50 new designees met with us Sunday afternoon for a reception as well.

We will continue our celebration for new designees in Iowa at the I-Day conferment on November 10, 2016 at Prairie Meadows. Our topic for I-Day will focus on Personal Lines, why it is important to both you and the industry, and what the future holds.

We will be installing smoke detectors with the Des Moines Fire Department for a Good Works project, October 8, 2016. Smoke detectors were purchased with our Good Works funds from the golf charity event in July. If you are still interested in helping, please contact me.  [click to continue…]

Records were meant to be broken and the Iowa CPCU Chapter broke a record this year for the number of new designees. No doubt, breaking the record was due to the annual meeting and commencement ceremony in Honolulu, Hawaii. Our chapter will be celebrating with 181 new designees in Hawaii from September 16 – 20. We are looking forward to keynote speaker, John Quinones, co-anchor of ABC Primetime, as well as hearing from Dewitt Jones, a professional photographer, film director and writer. In addition to the great speakers there will be classes on underwriting, claims, future of our industry, and career building to fill our days in Hawaii.

Back home in Iowa, we honor our new designees with a reception in Des Moines and at I-Day in November. Our reception was very well attended at Wellman’s on August 8 and we gave away a $50.00 gift card to Marcus Treimer based on participation in a networking activity during the reception. We had a good time meeting each other and we will hope to see everyone at the reception in Hawaii on Sunday, September 18 at the Hawaii  Convention Center from 3 – 4:30.
