A Message From Your President

I wanted to extend a special thank you to all the volunteers for working the CPCU booth at Drake this past week. For those that could not be involved, the booth was set up to benefit the students taking the January CPCU exams. We had materials about the CPCU Society, other insurance educational opporturntt.es, our student loan criteria and of course, snacks. Many students stopped by and commented that it was good to see our representation there. Kevin Seward and his committee did a great job in organizing the event.

The board has also decided that it would be nice to add the seven-part completers to our CPCU mailings. We hope to accomplish two goals with this change. The first goal will be to familiarize the students with the Iowa Chapter and the second is to encourage the completion of the designation. If anyone has other ideas, I would love to hear from you. Thanks.

Cindy Adams, CPA, CPCU President Iowa Chapter

February Meeting...

February's meeting of the Iowa Chapter will be held at the Marriott West (previously a Ramada Inn) 1250 - 74th Street, West Des Moines, on Thursday, February 19, 12:00 to 1:00. The topic of this month's meeting is "Developing Resillence to Change, Both Personally and Professionally." Pat Busick, Training Coordinator with Employee and Family Resources will be our guest speaker, with lunch to follow.

If you plan to attend, please complete the enclosed reservation form and return it to Bob Conroy, CGA-Grodt-Moore Insurance Agency, by Thursday, February 12.

In Memory.

Nineteen ninety-seven has seen the passing of two of the Iowa Chapter of CPCU past presidents.

Robb B. Kelley, CPCU

Robb B. Kelley served as our 8th president during the 1959-60 year. Born in Des Moines, he worked in various capacities for EMC Insurance Companies, retiring in 1992 as chairman of the board. He was the only Iowa Chapter member to serve as president of the National CPCU Society.

Robb was 80 years old when he passed away on September 1, 1997.

Vernon G. Goodwin, CPCU

Vernon G. Goodwin was our 37th president for the 1988-89 year. He was born in Evansville, Indiana, a little over 60 years ago.

Removed to Des Moines in the late 1960's and worked for Allied Mutual. Later he became director of commercial lines underwriting for Hawkeye-Security Insurance Company. At the time of his death on November 22, 1997, he was senior pastor at Gospel Assembly Church.

While both of these men served our membership well, it is interesting to note that the membership was a grand total of 28 when Robb was president and 244 when Vernon was president, compared to our current total of 503.

March Seminar Meeting

This year's Spring education seminar will be held on Thursday, March 12, at the Farm Bureau Auditorium, 8:00 to 11:30, and will be of interest to claims, underwriting and agency personnel.

The cost will be $50.00. The seminar will be covering two topics:

Ethics in Claims Handling

Proper handling of the claims file: avoiding bad faith claims.

Topics in Commercial Property Insurance

Treatment of "permanently affached" machinery and equipment.

The issue of the "innocent co-insured" (fraud clause).

Destruction of property by order of government authority.

"Consequential loss" vs. direct damage.

Business income - time deductible.

Deductible - What is an event?

Pollution losses under the commercial property policy. The speaker covering these topics will be Bruce HilIman, Managing Editor of the FC&S Bulletins. The format will be more interactive than in the past, and specific scenarios will be discussed, with a lot of audience interaction and lecture material.

This promises to be a most interesting seminar. In addition to being editor of the FC&S Bulletins, Bruce is an attorney with a vast knowledge of technical information relating to P & C insurance.
