February 2017 ChapterGram

Register for February Meeting

Well, it wouldn’t be Iowa without a little ice . . . or perhaps a lot of it. I hope everyone was able to stay safe and warm during the recent ice storm. Although we wish these storms didn’t occur, for me, they always make me think about why I love being in the insurance industry: making sure the needs of others are taken care of when disaster strikes. Many of us know 2016 was a rough year for losses, especially weather. But just think what things would look like without the protection offered by insurance and risk management products. I truly believe the insurance industry keeps the world moving.

Did you know that the Iowa CPCU Society Chapter is one of the premier sponsors of the Fire Safety House, operated by Blank Children’s Hospital? We also donated 100 smoke and carbon monoxide detectors both in 2014 and 2016. These are just a couple of the many ways our chapter, with your help, gives back to our local community. For the past several years, we have donated the proceeds of our golf tournament to Blank Children’s Hospital, and starting this year, we have committed to donating $2500 a year over the next 5 years, helping to fund the brand new Fire Safety House. As such, we are planning a free picnic this year (date TBD, but most likely July-August timeframe) for all of our members and their families, which will include the Fire Safety House. This is a great opportunity to talk about the hazards of fire with your children and teach them important, life-saving information. I am also very excited that we will be taking this opportunity to partner with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa(www.bbbsia.org) to host an event, prior to the picnic, for BBBS matches and families of the Littles. Again, this is due to the member support you provide. Thank you!

Our next meeting is on February 21, from 11:30-1:00, at the Des Moines Golf and Country Club. The topic will be diversity, and the speaker is Monica Stone, Deputy Director for the Iowa Depart-ment of Human Rights. As always, this is a great venue and our meetings provide amazing oppor-tunities for networking. If you have not attended a meeting before, make this one your first! If you are interested in learning more about Diversity within the Society, please visit the CPCU Society Diversity Committee website (http://www.cpcusociety.org/membership/diversity).

One last reminder, please take a moment to visit the Iowa Insurance Hall of Fame (IIHOF) website (www.iihof.org) as they are currently accepting applications for inductees of the IIHOF.  Applications will be accepted until March 1, 2017. Has there been someone in your career who has guided you and has provided the time and talent that keeps the Iowa insurance industry strong? This is a great opportunity to make sure those who made it possible for us to succeed are recognized.
