Time flies when you’re having fun! As my Presidential term winds down, we’ve been busy at The Iowa Chapter. On October 28th we hosted a successful Professional Development Seminar at Glen Oaks Country Club with Bob Skow moderating a panel of speakers addressing Career Development and Succession Planning.

On November 12th, we held our annual Insurance Industry Day (I-Day) at the Downtown Marriott. It was an informational presentation focused on the future of autos, cyber attacks, and drones. In addition, we conferred and celebrated our thirteen new designees! I’d like to personally welcome our new designees, and challenge them to be involved in the Iowa Chapter. I’d like to thank Adam Haugerud, Dalith Wells, and their entire planning committee for all their work in making I-Day 2015 a success! Also a special thank you to Brian Savko for making the early commitment to join us for our event this year!

I had the privilege of presenting the Burkhalter Award to Bob Conroy, CPCU, CIC at the conferment luncheon. Bob developed the CPCU and IIHOF websites, has served as the CPCU webmaster for nearly two decades, he’s a past president of our organization, he co-owns his own insurance agency, he’s a former insurance company executive, and is currently the Executive Director of the Iowa FAIR Plan. Hats off to Bob for all of his accomplishments in the property casualty industry!

On December 2nd, Brad Soma, Good Works Chair, will be hosting an appreciation event at Draught House 50 for members who have volunteered their time toward Good Works projects over the course of the year. As a chapter we work to give back to the community embarking on special events typically once per quarter. These projects are a great way to network on a different level while donating your time for a worthy cause. Your next opportunity to participate in a Good Works event will be at our December chapter meeting.

On December 10th, we will be hosting a social event for all members at Blue Moon Dueling Piano Bar in West Des Moines from 4:30 to 7pm. Be sure you wear an ugly sweater as prizes will be awarded for the ugliest sweater in the group!

Be sure to join us on December 17th at 3pm for our chapter meeting, when we will gather at the Wakonda Club for some networking and holiday cheer! Callista Gould will present on Business Meals and Meeting Etiquette. The Good Works Committee will be collecting donations for the Food Pantry at this meeting. Both cash and non-perishable food items will be accepted. Please plan ahead and bring food or money!

Last but not least I’d like to thank all of the volunteers serving alongside me on the CPCU Board. It has been quite a ride, and I have thoroughly enjoyed the privilege of serving the Iowa Chapter with each and every one of you! It has been a fun and unique learning opportunity that I will always treasure. Thank you for entrusting me with the responsibility of leading this great organization, it has been a pleasure!

May you and your family have a safe and wonderful holiday season!

Kimberly D. Smetzer, CPCU
